At the height of Queen Victoria's British Empire, countless men and women set off to explore the face of the globe, at the same moment that the phenomenon of mass tourism was being launched by a Mr Thomas Cook.
Some were searching for knowledge, for adventure. Some hoped to be the first to stamp their mark upon unknown lands, while others dreamed of bringing home ancient works of art or of finding untold natural riches. Some were sailors, spies, scholars or scientists, and some wished to spread their religion and convert the heathen. And some travelled, as people have always done, for no reason at all except the sheer marvellous enjoyment of it.
