99 MONTHS
THE CASE OF THE SYDNEY DOUBLE MURDERS

On 15 September 2003, two Singaporean students at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Tony Tan Poh Chuan and Tay Chow Lyang, were brutally murdered in their apartment.

Eight-and-a-half months later, their housemate and fellow Singaporean, Ram Tiwary, was arrested for their murders. Although Tiwary proclaimed innocence, he was found guilty in 2006 and sentenced to life imprisonment. A successful appeal overturned the convictions and awarded him a retrial, which also resulted in guilty verdicts in 2009.

But two days after the second appeal in 2012, the New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeal overturned the 2009 convictions and acquitted him. Tiwary was released after spending over 8 years in maximum security jail.

Ram Tiwary returned to Singapore in 2012 after his release. Although a free man, the memories of that fateful day and the experience of 99 months of incarceration continue to haunt him today.

Was he convicted of a crime he did not commit? Was crucial evidence overlooked in favour of a hasty conviction? And who, then, is really responsible for the murders of his friends?
