So ends Jane Austen's much-loved story of Emma Woodhouse as she celebrates her marriage to Mr George Knightley. Rachel Billington finds Emma a year later, still living at her family home, Hartfield, still surrounded by the Westons, the Eltons and the Bates, but without any true friend. When her narrow life is shaken by a tragedy, Emma must cope with the return of Frank Churchill and Mr Knightley has to deal with a wife who is changing before his eyes.
