When he receives word of his father's passing, Henri D'Artagnan knows he must return home to Gascony to claim his inheritance, though he is. reluctant to leave his new life as a musketeer. But his companions vow to accompany him—and along the way, they are set upon by highway- men intent, it seems, not on thievery but on D'Artagnan's death.
The musketeers' suspicions are aroused by the encounter, and later, when D'Artagnan learns that his father was killed in a supposedly fair duel, he knows in his heart of hearts that no duelist could ever best his father in an honorable test of skills.
