It was in June 1916 that Princess Vittoria Colonna met the Futurist painter Umberto Boccioni. The love affair between them was brief but intense on the seventeenth of August Boccioni died following a fall from his horse. The last letter he received from Vittoria was found in his wallet.
This collection of letters, which remained hidden for almost a century, is all that remains of the relationship between a restless noble- woman and a tormented painter. It provides a basis for the story Marella Caracciolo Chia tells that of a Roman princess and a major twentieth-century artist, their unbridled passion and the tragic accident that separates them for ever. Set in the midst of Italian and English high society (the princess was a close friend of Edward VII and against the threatening backdrop of the First World War, this moving account also provides a compelling insight into a remote and fascinating world.
