David Herbert Lawrence (11 September 1885-
2 March 1930) or D.H. Lawrence as he is popularly known, was a prolific English writer, poet, playwright, painter and literary critic. Considered one of the pioneers of modernism in English literature, Lawrence wrote effectively on the theme of dehumanization and the deterioration of human values as a result of industrialization and modernity. He develops several such themes in his short stories, some of the finest of which are brought together in this collection: 'The Rocking-horse Winner', 'The Odour of Chrysanthemums', 'The Old Adam' and 'The Princess' among others.
