In the years before the Great War, the writer M. R. James told ghost stories by candlelight to a handful of friends and scholars after the Christmas Eve carol service at King's College, Cambridge. Now, twenty- five years later, those men are being killed off, one by one, confronting Detective Inspector Archie Penrose with some of the most horrific and audacious murders of his career. He is aided by his friend, Josephine Tey. who is investigating the case of a brutal attacker preying on young women in the town.
