I hope you enjoy my latest novel, Sing You Home, which is accompanied by a soundtrack of songs inspired by the story. I'm very proud of the fact that this book has a musical component. When I knew I was going to be writing a story that addressed same-sex families and some of the issues they have to face, I knew that I wanted one of these women to have a voice in my novel, to show that they simply want the same things as everyone else: a home and a family and a loving relationship. I suppose I could have just given Zoe a first person narrative, but I wanted readers to really hear her. To identify with her. To feel the pain she's felt and the hope she still carries throughout her story. And since she's a songwriter, what better way to spill out her feelings than through music?
I was fortunate enough to have a close friend, Ellen Wilber, agree to write music with Zoe's emotions in mind, created from poetry that I provided. I'm thrilled that Ellen and I got to have this collaborative experience, and I am delighted by the outcome. When you hear Zoe sing, you may be listening to Ellen's beautiful voice, but you'll be hearing Zoe's heart.
