"You lose your loved ones, and still you want to live'

After the Nazis reached the small Polish town of Zolkiew, life for Jewish 15-year-old Clara was never to be the same again. While those around her
were slaughtered or transported, Clara's family and two others hid in a hand-dug bunker. Living above them were the Becks.

Mr Beck was a hard-drinking, philandering, self-professed anti-Semite an unlikely hero who risked his life throughout the war to keep his charges safe. Life under his protection was anything but predictable. From his nightly drinking sessions with the SS to his affair with one of the women in the bunker, it seemed the families had as much to fear from Beck as they did from the war.

Sixty years later Clara has written an extraordinary testimony. Clara's War is lyrical, dramatic and, despite the worst of circumstances, a true story of hope and survival.
