In Mao's China, Lian's parents have lost their prominence and are
considered beneath contempt. Just as she forms a friendship with Kim, a reviled member of the third caste, she has to join her mother in a re-education camp. Despite the gruelling conditions, Lian finds solace there with some of China's leading scholars, who teach her to distinguish truth from propaganda.
